I'm concluding this series on ‘How to Successfully Deal with Difficult People’.

IN dealing with difficult people, it is important to learn to keep your cool. Many difficult people irritate, that’s why they are difficult in the first place. You must therefore be in charge when dealing with them. Losing your cool means losing charge.

Select your Battle. It’s not all difficult people you need to spend your energies on or confront. If someone you have to deal with continuously say for example your husband is difficult, then brace up and deal with him. If however it is one-off encounter with say a customer service agent, you may well ignore and move on. When confronting a difficult person a good advise is to do it privately. Nothing flares up people like when they are put down publicly, this defeats the whole purpose of dealing with the difficult person.

Discover the inner man. Many difficult people are not difficult for the fun of it. It may be helpful in dealing with a difficult person to find out what the underlying reason for their difficulty is. Have they been bereaved, bankrupted, disappointed or jilted?  What can you do to help them rather than discarding them. Gaining people is always better than losing them, which should be considered even as a last option.

Be strategic. Is there someone who positively influences the difficult person you are dealing with? Many people have positive influences. You may want to consider using that person on that difficult person you are dealing with.
