SOMEONE,
I would call Tony, once went to the National Hospital in Abuja, Nigeria, to see
a friend at the Accident and Emergency ward. As he walked towards a lady, wearing what was a
hospital coat, to make enquiry, he heard someone crying behind the flowers. On
a closer look he saw it was a woman clutching a baby, maybe 3 years old. The
baby too was crying apparently distressed by her mother's tears. As he looked
at the mother and child, imagining what could be the matter, the lady in robe
called his attention.
The
lady, whom he later got to know as Dr. Bimpe, informed him that Amanda, the
friend he had gone to see in hospital, was doing good but needed to rest hence
her also stepping out to catch some fresh air. Amanda had been involved in an accident
at work. She was hysterical and had to be put to sleep.
The
mother and her baby's tears filtered in again disrupting Tony’s chat with Dr.
Bimpe. He looked towards them with concern. Dr. Bimpe walked towards them and
he followed, curiously. She stooped and talked to the mother. All Tony could
hear was Dr. Bimpe encouraging the mother to get a family member to buy the
consumable needed for her child on admission. When Dr. Bimpe stood up, Tony
enquired what was wrong with the woman. She said nothing to worry about. He
insisted.

Taking
him away from hearing distance of the mother and child she informed Tony that the
woman’s other 5 year old child was fighting for life in the ward. She had
already given the woman money to buy some emergency drugs needed for her son
and couldn’t afford anything more. Dr. Bimpe explained that if she was
personally involved with all her patients then she is simply courting financial
troubles.
Tony
understood her point. And how much is the woman looking for more. "Another
five thousand Naira" (about $20 USD). Tony was in shock "Five
thousand Naira only?” he asked in bewilderment. The Doctor nodded. He quickly
reached for his pocket, brought out money he had initially budgeted for a fish (social)
outing with a group of friends, and gave it to Dr. Bimpe. She pointed to the
woman and her baby, requesting Tony give the money directly to the mother and
baby. Dr. Bimpe excused herself to hurry back to the ward; perhaps to get ready
for the woman's son whom she would have to attend to shortly.
Tony walked up to the woman, held her hand and squeezed the money to her...she broke down profusely, blessing and praying for Tony, who hurriedly stepped aside, and broke down too. Five thousand Naira, money for a drink, human life... he thought.
It's amazing what “little monies” can do in the life of someone else.
As we
fete and enjoy, let us spare a thought for many not as fortunate.
Look
around in your neighbourhood. There are many a widow, an orphan or a cause that
you can support.
There
is this centre at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Lagos Nigeria,
called the Mirabel Centre. They are involved with providing free counseling and
support to boys, girls and women who are sexually abused. To date they have
assisted over four hundred people. Sadly, this centre is at the risk of closing
down because their funding is running out. You can support this centre among
many other brilliant causes. This is the higher purpose
of money; to put a smile on someone's face. Start today!
