IN your quest for
the good life, in your pursuit of happiness, success and peace of mind, are you
clear and resolved on what you really want? This might sound trite,
but truth be told, a lot of us have an idea of what we want but are not totally
clear about it. Of course this has wider implications. We
ask the wrong questions for instance and get the wrong answers. Rather
than focus, we disperse energies and efforts. We make imprecise and many times
displaced demands on life, and then accuse life of being unfair. I can go on
and on.
The story is told of a
couple who were celebrating their 70th birthday and 50th
wedding anniversary.
The husband asked the wife
what she wanted to mark these significant milestones. Without hesitating she
said she wanted to go on a holiday to Hawaii. She wanted to enjoy the beaches,
the sun and the sand, and who wouldn’t anyway. While on the holiday, walking on
the beach, the couple stumbles on a bottle. They pick it up, open it and wuuuuushhh a genie pops out. The genie
is very grateful to the couple for releasing him from a long captivity in the
bottle. As a sign of his deep gratitude, the genie tells the couple to each
make a wish.

Being a gentleman, the
husband allows the wife to go first. The wife wishes for a diamond ring the
size of a football. The genie grants it. Next, the husband. The husband wishes
for a wife younger by 29 years….boooooom,
instantly, wish granted, the husband becomes ….99 years
Indeed the husband got his
wish – his wife became 29 years younger, but he didn’t bargain to be 29 years
older.
Be careful what
you ask for, be clear what you want and what you ask for, or what you don’t ask
for may also follow. There are skills in asking the right
questions, in demanding from life, and getting the required answers. What is your name does not mean or include
where you are from or what you do.
