Humanity in Business Series: Celebrate Your Mentor

DEPENDING on the part of the world you are in, yesterday was Mother’s Day. This day afforded the opportunity to celebrate the carrier of destinies, builder of the future, mind ‘crafter’, guide of the path, call her whatever you like; Mama, Mum, Mma, Mummy, Ma, Nne, Iya, whatever, it means and sounds sweet. God bless mothers and mothers to be. To those whose mothers are alive, hope you took out time to celebrate them. To others, like me, whose mothers have passed, take heart. I know the feeling. I miss my mother so much its indescribable. God bless her memory as she rests in peace.

It is so refreshing to note that being a mother is not restricted to being biologically responsible for a child. It also includes providing guidance and mentorship to a child, and indeed anyone. Like a preacher noted, motherhood is a calling. Its mentorship. And haven’t we had a mother in one form or the other?

A vast majority of business and financial successes are quick to point to mentors who helped them achieve their numerous successes. And what a great mentor the world has in a mother. Who is a mentor you may ask or want to remind yourself? According to Wikipedia, a mentor is, ‘a more experienced or more knowledgeable person that helps to guide a less experienced or less knowledgeable person’… and I add in the ways of life. A mother can be likened to a mentor.

The fact remains that as we strive for higher business and financial grounds, we must take out time to celebrate the mentors in our lives. I have enjoyed my own fair share of mentors and I celebrate them.

How do you celebrate a mentor? Explore your creativity here. Write a well-crafted ‘thank you’ letter, buy a gift, put across a call to say ‘thank you’, publicly brag about your mentor, just do something to celebrate your mentor. Don’t ignore or disrespect your mentor. Remember the wise words of Mike Murdock, ‘what you respect, you will attract’. And according to Ralph Emerson, ‘Men are what their mothers made them’. You might well become what your mentor makes you. So, celebrate your mentor or mentors as the case may be.

Whether you succeed or not, is really in your hands. Remember that when you set the sails, God sends the wind.

Your feedback is welcome
