IN a recent
survey, many people said that one of the topmost items on their personal agenda is to make
their lives count for a purpose bigger than them. This is indeed noble and
commendable. It’s likely also that you share the same sentiment. We most are
agreed that life must not end with us, that life, no matter how beautifully
lived or wealth acquired, is not an end in itself. Indeed, we agree that life
is more than food and clothing, even when we lack these basic human needs.
Is it not then instructive and maybe indicting to see some people live
as if they own life, or as if life is all about them? You may therefore want to ask, in today’s world, with
all the fears, mistrust, pressures and uncertainties, how does one live purposefully?
There are surely many ways, but for the benefit of these series, I will simply
say, ‘Be a Mentor’. You can be a mentor regardless of your age. Mentorship is based on your experience
or knowledge in a field, and of course your heart.

Being
a mentor gives your life an eternal significance. I personally believe that the
challenges many nations face today, and the collapse of many businesses, are
traceable to the shortage of men and women with a heart of gold, a heart to
mentor. Of course also, is the other side of the
spectrum; a teeming number of people that can’t endure mentorship. An
apprentice signs a 3 year training contract to learn car repairs or tailoring,
only to leave after about one year to become an independent business owner. I guess a number of us have examples of losses from such
charlatans, I have.
But
like the Igbos would say, ‘you don’t for the fear of
death refuse to go to war’. We must not allow the challenges of
mentorship deter us from mentoring. I encourage you therefore to pour yourself
into another. You may want adopt a business today, organize
free classes and teach some skills or dedicate time to counsel and advice. Be a
mentor, that is purposeful living.
A big
thank you to Pastor Michael Olawore, who inspired parts of this episode.
Whether you succeed or not, is really in your hands. Remember that
when you set the sails, God sends the wind.
Your feedback is welcome
