Test That Narrative

GROWING up, in the news, on social media platforms, in our environment, virtually everywhere, we get fed with all manner of narratives that eventually form our belief system and view of life. But you may want to pause and take a second look at some of these narratives. Indeed you may want to challenge these narratives and live free. Here are three examples worth considering.

What will be will be, que sera sera. Without a doubt, what will be will be, but what about what will not be or was not meant to be, but we make to be, or to become, because we refuse to take responsibility for our actions, or fail to play our part in sharpening the outcome. In some societies, this phrase, what will be will be, has been taken to such a sad level, that many people have simply resigned to fate, chance, hope and luck. It has taken life and power from people. People have stopped making efforts, stopped thinking, stopped challenging the status quo, people have stopped living. They simply sit back and console themselves that, what will be will be. Be careful not to fall for this. Do not be guilty of just sitting back, because what will be will be.

All fingers are not equal. Yes, and rightly too, all fingers are not equal and are not created to be. But all fingers are unique and serve their purpose. The fact that all fingers are not equal does not suggest that each finger cannot deliver something unique, something special. The thumb may not perform what your ring finger can do. Look for that something special, that makes you exceptional and exploit it. And never forget that life is not a competition, so why should we aspire to live equally. Indeed all fingers are not equal. Find your lane and run your race.

You can be self-made. This one is abit tricky I must admit. I’m sure you have heard the phrase, ‘he or she is a self-made man or woman’. You really want to ask, can one really be self-made? If, and indeed we do, we live a world that thrives on networks and relationships, can anyone truly claim to be self-made? Life is not all about hard or smart work, life is about hard and smart work, about relations and networks, and about believes and opportunities. Life is a mix. Time and chance happen to life. The point here is that we must be careful not to ascribe our successes to self-effort alone. Life is a balance, a balance between the spiritual and the physical, find that balance and live fulfilled.

I encourage you to take out time and revisit all the narratives you grew up with or hear every day. Can they stand objective scrutiny? Test that narrative before you accept it.
