July: 2nd Half, 2nd Chance

IT'S July, the second half of the year. For many people, they don’t want to imagine it; there are still a lot of unmet expectations, broken dreams and tough unachieved targets, and the clock is still ticking. Well, the clock is created to tick, and you and I can really do nothing about it. So this is surely not a time to despair, rather it’s a time to overhaul and advance. Growing up in the 1980s and 90s, I used to enjoy watching an interesting Nigerian TV programme called 2nd Chance. Basically, the programme was about...

...a group of adults in an adult education class. I remember great characters like Madam Kofo with her distracting and many times annoying head ties, at least according to Anukam and Okonkwo, two other wonderful characters, among others. These characters missed out on formal education at a younger age, but had another opportunity to learn reading and writing, they had a second chance.

Life, sometimes, presents us a second chance. And you can bet that it can be very refreshing to have second chance. Reading this post, I may safely say you still have a second chance to accomplish the laudable plans set out for 2016. Yes, you can.

So what should be the game plan as we begin a new half of the year, what should you be doing to finish strong and as planned in 2016? Here are some thoughts

No matter how poorly you might feel about the year, I encourage you to have an attitude of gratitude. Why you may ask, even after non achievement of early and mid-year plans? On gratitude, Epicurus, an ancient Greek philosopher as well as the founder of the school of philosophy called Epicureanism says, “Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.”  How true.

Pull out your year plan again and review it. Ask yourself why what items on the plan that have not been achieved have not been achieved? Because every item is peculiar, I encourage you to do a brainstorming on this. What shifts do you have to make, what collaborations do you need to forge and so on. Identify what can help you achieve your goal and go for it. Until I joined a group on WhatsApp, I did not realize what I was missing in my new found passion of blogging.

Seek help. It is very curious and shocking how too many people are either embarrassed or proud, or indeed both, when it comes to seeking help. I know someone who, unless it is life threatening, would never ask for help. In personal and business development, that is not the way to go. Infact you must constantly research for where you can get help. This surely does not abdicate your personal responsibilities, rather, it empowers you, and widens your sphere of influence. And interestingly, not every help is paid for. You will be shocked the number of people willing to render their services knowing that they are helping. Go for help in achieving your 2016 plans.
