There Is A Miracle In Your Work

THERE is a much celebrated story in Nigeria and beyond, and rightly too, of Olajumoke Orisaguna, the former bread hawker turned super star. Is it not interesting to note that, ‘There is a Miracle in Your Work’? Why are many people blind to this fact?

It might seem strange to explain how an ‘ordinary oni buredi (meaning bread seller) walking the streets of Lagos becomes oni goldi (meaning wealthy individual)’ and a global icon all within about one week? There must be a miracle somewhere.

However one looks at it, it’s so refreshing to see that indeed ‘the land is green’, and can be green for anyone irrespective of social class, economic background or educational qualification. Olajumoke’s story is a strong testament that indeed ‘all things are possible…’ It epitomises the general believe that in life, you may go to bed a pauper, and wake a millionaire, legitimately.

It is very instructive to note that Olajumoke was at her place of primary assignment, doing what she knows and loves to do, at least at that point in time: she was selling bread. She wasn’t in some far corner chatting away, sleeping or gossiping. She was working.  What you curse and despise cannot answer for or bless you. There is a miracle in your work.

Have you wondered how long Olajumoke may have hawked bread on the streets of Lagos, having relocated from Osun state to make ends meet? It’s noteworthy that she didn’t give up despite the stress of the job. Reports say she used to sleep on the floor of the bakery. Hmmm. Possibly on the day of the T Y Bello encounter, she was tired and tempted to ‘sit and rest awhile’, afterall ‘body no be wood’. But did she? No she didn’t. Perseverance is still a virtue. The door of life indeed opens to him who knocks and knocks and knocks and knocks. May you never be faulted for not knocking or failing to continue knocking on the door of life….

Olajumoke was praying and working for her nation, Nigeria by her work – selling bread. Nothing is more honourable like labour so decent and dignified. By doing her work, she was contributing to the growth and development of her country. In the same vein every decent and dignified labour at whatever capacity directly contributes to the growth of a nation one finds himself. She highlighted the time tested principle that ‘there is dignity in labour’.

Olajumoke was matured enough to mind her business and amply curious to look at ‘the other side’. That same street passed by Olajumoke while the photo shoot was on was passed by many others who may not have been as curious. Many times in life we should show an interest in what happens on ‘the other side’. Life is not all about us and our profession.

It is time we looked at the other side of Olajumoke’s story; there is a miracle in your work.

Whether you succeed or not, is really in your hands. Remember that when you set the sails, God sends the wind.
