Another Christmas, another…BEWARE!!!

CHRISTMAS. It’s all in the air; the music, commerce, relationships, holidays, you name it. Even the weather tells us it is Christmas. Like you know, this season also brings its peculiar challenges requirements and pressures. The need to buy presents for loved ones, give someone a special treat, and travel to exciting places. The list continues. Beware of these season tricks as you prepare for Christmas

By all means, Christmas is a great season. I love this season. On this edition, I would talk about being safe and wise in this season. Let me put it differently, I would like to remind you of the obvious, and you have to forgive me for doing it. I read the post of an old lady who couldn’t understand why people will work all year only to spend it at Christmas and even be in debt. This old lady also discovered that some people borrow the money they don’t have to impress the people they don’t like. Is it not strange that people complain about January being a tough month yet they just spent a fortune at Christmas, just some days back?

Must one spend all that money at Christmas? Must January be a tough month every year? In whatever expense you decide to do this Christmas never forget that Christmas is just a season, actually not more than 1 week with all the festivities, but your life and life plans are not a season. So why must the season of Christmas be made more superior than your life and the plans for your life? Why must you spend all that money and embark on that trip, buy that expensive wear, host that lavish party, spend on impulse and all, and come January you struggle to pay the children’s school fees, hide from your creditors, and barely survive the beginning of the year?

Do you realize that all the noise and advertisements about Christmas are mainly to enrich the advertisers? It’s sad but true. Very few of those attractions asking for your money understand the purpose of Christmas so why must you fall for the advertising tricks? Why must one get in debt because of a season? Why must one eat his future today? I choose and dare to be different. What about you?

The point here is for you to be wise and prudent this season. While you buy the gifts, important as it is, remember that the main purpose of a gift is the thought behind the gift not necessarily the value. It is also useful to begin Christmas shopping earlier in the year as this saves money. Well that will now be for 2016. To also help you save money you may also consider postponing that trip or giving that special treat till after the Christmas.

This season, and indeed always, never be carried away by the demands of the time, the rush to get it also. Pause, wait, think and think again. That money can be put to better use. A popular preacher once said that anything that must be bought now is perhaps not worth it. Am I saying that you may not treat yourself a little? By all means please do! But please be guided. Christmas is just a season, but your life and life plans are not a season.

Whether you succeed or not, is really in your hands. Remember that when you set the sails, God sends the wind.
