AN Anthropologist
proposed a game to children of an African tribe. He put a basket of fruit near
a tree and told the kids that the first one to reach the fruits would win them
all. When he told them to run, the children took one
another’s hand and ran together, then sat together and enjoyed the fruits.
When asked why they ran like that, as one could have taken all the fruits for
oneself, they said…
‘…Ubuntu,
how can one of us be happy if all the others are sad?’
‘We
are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of
destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. Never again can
we afford to live with the narrow, provincial…idea’ – Dr. Martin Luther King. I am because you are, I am because we are. This is
very profound even in the business world. This popular saying readily comes to
mind, ‘if you want to walk fast, walk alone. If you
want to walk far, walk together. Do you see why many businesses do not
outlive their owners? They chose to walk alone.
We now live in a period when it seems acceptable to take it all to
oneself. Increasingly, the ‘I, Me and Myself’ mantra seem to
be the order of the day. As examples, the mind boggling reports of the Panama
papers and cases of outright theft of many a nation’s commonwealth by people
who hold it in trust and care tell it all.

More
and more, caring for ones neighbour seems like one distant phenomenon, and like
some people would say, rather derogatorily, caring for your neighbour is ’story
for the gods’, meaning it’s not necessary, impractical or outright nonsensical.
Everyman to himself, they will be quick to note, sadly.
But
what can be farther from the truth, from the very essence of life as we are tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever
affects one directly, affects all indirectly. Think about this.
As
you set out for the week, always keep these points in mind:
The world is not all about you, though you make up a very crucial part
of it. Show some kindness, lend some helping hand and look out for the other
person.
This
week, I therefore encourage you to take the Kindness
Challenge. Show some love or kindness to someone, especially someone who
does not have the capacity to repay you. Perhaps you want to forgive a debt,
and set the debtor free, whatever you choose to do, take the Kindness
Challenge. I surely look forward to hearing your story.
Remember,
I Am Because You Are
Please leave a comment
Whether you succeed or not, is really in your hands. Remember that
when you set the sails, God sends the wind.
